AREAS OF PRACTICE

  • Approximately 30 years of involvement in complex commercial
    litigation including construction, real estate, banking and general
    business litigation.

  • Litigated construction claims ranging in value up to $39,000,000
    involving industrial buildings, hotels, shopping centers, manufacturing
    plants, pharmaceutical plants, schools, water treatment plants and
    wastewater treatment plants, pipeline installation and tunnel construction.

  • Has represented numerous municipalities in North Carolina with respect to
    bidding and negotiating public construction contracts as well as resolving claims
    arising out of public construction projects.




  • Assists in negotiating construction contracts and advising clients on claims and litigation avoidance procedures.

  • Extensive experience in litigating design claims, workmanship claims and construction delays, acceleration and scheduling issues.

  • Has represented lenders and borrowers in connection with loan restructuring and workouts and the exercise of judicial remedies in loan default situations. 

  • Has represented litigants in a variety of business settings including breach of contract, business torts and shareholder / partnership disputes. 

  • Certified Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association specializing in business and construction disputes.

  • Admitted to practice in all Courts of the State of North Carolina, the United States District Courts for the Western, Middle and Eastern Districts of North Carolina, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. 

  • General Counsel to the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County. 

  • President and member of the Board of Directors of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association and served as a Director and Officer of the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation. 

  • Served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, Judge Advocate General Corps, 1970-1972 with a tour of duty in the Republic of Korea. 

  • Past Chairman of the Board of Managers of the Uptown YMCA and the Gateway YMCA, current member of the West Boulevard YMCA Board of Managers and past recipient of the George Williams Award presented for lifetime achievement by the YMCA of Greater Charlotte.

  • Selected by Business North Carolina magazine as one of the elite construction lawyers in the State of North Carolina and as a North Carolina Super Lawyer by Law & Politics and the publishation of Charlotte Magazine, in the area of construction law..
